Timber: Sales Workshop

The Brief

Deliver a workshop to prepare technical staff with sales skills for a critical prospecting event.

The Challenges

  • Participants had varying degrees of English.
  • Most were deeply introverted technical experts with no sales experience or confidence.
  • They had to demonstrate confident new sales skills at an exhibition 2 weeks after training.
  • We had only two mornings in which to prepare them.

Our Solution

First we took the time to understand the client’s niche industry deeply. In fact, so deeply that we wowed the client with timber sales knowledge on the first day. We designed an interactive program that broke down the sales elements into achievable skills of connection, engagement and closing with activities that progressed in challenge.

✨ The Outcome

An interactive activity-based program that got them immediately practicing. We gave them multiple opportunities to try, fail, receive feedback, then try again and succeed, each time increasing their confidence. They practiced both in their own languages and in English so that they could engage with multicultural clients. At their exhibition they were ready to engage and connect, resulting in hot leads that led to new business.

My background: I'm originally from the UK and I've lived in Hong Kong for over 20 years. My family is English and Cantonese, which means I adapt well to multicultural environments. Over 25 years of human resources experience: I've been an HR manager, a learning & development manager, and I was the head of recruitment for both Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Royal Bank of Scotland Coutts. I know banking deeply, but I also thrive in designing and delivering learning for niche industries.

Why use us? In banking, I sat through hours of boring one-way lecture-type training which no one enjoyed. I started The Buckingham Academy to deliver useful learning in a way that people LOVE and remember.

Our approach: Adults learn best when they practise new skills and get immediate feedback. We create environments where people LEAP out of their comfort zone, explore new possibilities, and try new skills. Our sessions are different because they are high energy so expect lots of noise and laughter while learning serious subjects. 96% of our clients rebook us because they see we engage their people differently.

A bit about me: Outside of work I love adventure sports, I attended skydiving school and am an advanced nitrox rated scuba diver. I currently coach the Hong Kong Waterski team and represent Hong Kong in international waterski tournaments. In 2025, I received my MSc in Human Resource Management. My dissertation on the impact of soft skills training in Greater China received my intake year's highest mark of 91%.

As a Partner and Executive Director in a high-growth SME, I helped drive exponential revenue and profit growth, contributing to the company's successful listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

What I do now: I work with leaders and sales teams across industries like Financial Services, IT, Health Care, to strengthen leadership capability, sharpen commercial execution, improve managerial skills and accelerate business growth.

My approach: My programmes are practical, high-energy, and results-focused, built on real-world leadership experience, not just theory. Participants leave with clear frameworks, actionable tools and the confidence to perform at a higher level immediately.

A bit about me: I'm fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. I hold an EMBA from City University of Hong Kong. When I'm not working, I love playing golf.
